DPP orders probe into ‘missing’ 30m litres fuel

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Fostino Maele has asked Malawi Police Service to probe the alleged sale of some of the 30 million litres of fuel Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) donated to Malawi.

The fuel was reportedly donated to Malawi after former president Lazarus Chakwera met his then DRC counterpart Felix Tshisekedi in Angola in August 2023, at the peak of fuel shortages in the country.

Maele said in an interview yesterday that his office has responded to a query by civil society entity Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (Cdedi) for the probe.

“We are in receipt of your [Cdedi] letter. We have forwarded the same to the police for investigations,” reads the DPP’s response.

Cdedi earlier wrote the DPP calling for a probe, stating that its findings showed that only 1.2 million litres of the donated 30 million litres reached Malawi, with the remainder allegedly sold to a company in Tanzania.

Cdedi executive director wrote to Maele requesting an explanation regarding the whereabouts of the fuel.

The letter, dated March 18 2026, reads: “Independent investigations show that only 1.2 million litres came to Malawi, the rest was allegedly sold to a company in Tanzania. A local company was involved in this transaction.

“Malawians are interested in this matter since the fuel came in the name of Malawians and not specific individuals. Malawians have the right to know the whereabouts of the proceeds accrued from the sales.”

Namiwa yesterday confirmed receiving the response letter from the DPP.

The DRC government’s fuel pledge came at a time when Malawi was experiencing severe fuel shortages, forcing motorists to queue for days.
